Title P-wave particle motion data for InSight Low-Frequency events and the relevant software code
Creator Xu Wang
Subject P-wave particle motions

Description To image the shallow crustal structures of Mars can provide valuable insights into its geological evolution and climate history. We conducted an analysis of P-wave particle motions (PPMs) from Low-Frequency events recorded by the InSight mission, and used them to invert for subsurface structures beneath the landing site. The PPM measurements are stored in the ‘data’ folder, while the codes for extracting and inverting PPMs are located in the ‘VPPM’ and ‘PPMinv’ folders, respectively. For each event, PPMs obtained with 1-Hz narrow band-stop filtering are stored in the path ‘./data/Bs0p99t1p01/EventLabel/’, while those without such filtering are stored in the path ‘./data/NoBs/EventLabel/’. The inversion results are stored in the directory ‘./PPMinv/data/rfi_files/NA_MDL/’.

Type PPM files consist of ‘*all*.dat’ and ‘*sel*.dat’. The ‘*all*.dat’ file contains all measurements, while the ‘*sel*.dat’ file includes measurements with comprehensive factor values exceeding the median. In these files, columns, from left to right, illustrate the PPM estimate, linearity degree of polarization, cross-correlation coefficient, signal-to-noise ratio, comprehensive factor, frequency of high-pass filter, and starting and ending points of the time window. The ‘summary_ppm.dat’ file contains event-averaged results, with three columns representing the Gaussian coefficient, PPM measurement result, and its standard deviation. The final model file, named ‘best_models.dat,’ comprises columns detailing the misfit value, thickness of the first and second layers, velocity of the first and second layers, generated epicentral distance, difference between the optimal and generated back-azimuths, and ray parameter.
